The Empire Technology Prize is Offering $10 Million for Clean, Tall-Building Heating Solutions 

New York’s buildings account for one third of New York State’s GHG emissions, and 70% of New York City’s. The $10M Empire Technology Prize is looking for innovators to develop and/or demonstrate centralized, clean heating or distribution solutions that avoid expensive and disruptive installation in New York—solutions that can either work with existing steam or high temperature hot water distribution systems, or do not require these systems to be removed. Up to seven finalists will be selected into the prize and collectively eligible for $7M in funding. Applications are open until March 22, 2024.

Cohort News

Evercloak Raises $2M in an Oversubscribed Seed Round

Evercloak, a cohort 3 Scale For ClimateTech alum, is manufacturing graphene-based membranes for dehumidification to significantly reduce the energy use and associated greenhouse gasses-related to building cooling. This new funding will allow Evercloak to scale up its manufacturing, strengthen its commercial team, and give the world a more sustainable way to cool buildings.

Pulsenics Officially Collaborating with Hyzon Motors

Pulsenics, a provider of advanced impedance spectroscopy and data solutions from cohort 4 of Scale For ClimateTech, announced that its collaborating on a project with Hyzon Motors, a global supplier of hydrogen electric vehicles.This project aims to decrease the cost of hydrogen heavy-duty trucks so that they can be cost competitive to conventional diesel engines. The proprietary technology will give a real-time look into the internal conditions of Hyzon Motors fuel cells.

Twelve was Featured on Bloomberg Originals’ Show An Optimist’s Guide to the Planet

An Optimist’s Guide to the Planet captures Nikolaj Coster-Waldau’s search for people across the globe who are helping drive humanity toward a brighter, more sustainable future. On February 8, 2024, the new show featured Twelve, maker of the breakthrough technology that eliminates CO2 by turning it into essential products that traditionally are made from fossil fuels. Twelve participated in cohort 3 of Scale For ClimateTech. The Co-Founder and Chief Technology Officer, Kendra Kuhl, also went live on Bloomberg Media’s segment “The Close” to talk about the show and their technology.

US Cities Run Snow Plows on BioDiesel, Thanks to Optimus Technologies

The cities of Ames, IA, Madison, WI, and Washington, DC have utilized Optimus Technologies’ Vector System for its snowplows this winter, which are now using 100% biodiesel (B100) as the decarbonization solution for their heavy-duty fleets. Each city equipped its fleets with the Vector System to fight the cold temperatures at the end of January. The use of Optimus Technologies was covered in Biofuels International Magazine

Mars Materials Successfully Relocates Pilot Reactor to Shell Technology Center

Mars Materials produces low-cost, low-carbon acrylonitrile (used to make plastics) using captured-CO₂ and bio-based feedstocks. Recently, the company relocated their pilot reactor from the National Renewable Energy Laboratory in Golden, CO to the Shell Technology Center in Houston, TX. The move is part of a collaboration with Shell, Brown & Root Industrial Services LLC, and Raum Industries.
